Monday 4/26/99 Brownfields Introductions 28) Peter Meyer Center of Env. Meyer" <PBMEYE02@ATHENA.LOUISVILLE.EDU> Organization: Center for Environmental Management, U of Louisville I'm Peter Meyer, with an "edu" trailer on my e-mail, but with a foot in both the academic and business camps on brownfields (and, increasingly, it appears, on military base closures). I oritinally got into brownfields from an economic development/sustainable development angle, and am now heavily into all elements of financing issues. I am a professor in a PhD program in urban and public affairs and director of a Center for Environmental Management at the Univeristy of Louisville, where I also direct our new EPA Environmental Finance Center. On the side, I run a small consulting firm that has been doing work for EPA and HUD on brownfields policy development and impacts. In the latter capacity, I am responsible for the oft-referenced "HUD Insurance Study" (thanks for the publicity) and am currently doing analysis of state Voluntary Cleanup Programs and their impacts on brownfield cleanup and redevelopment efforts. The EFC will be looking at brownfields in conjunction with work on urban infill and the general issue of communities and how they are affected by the spatial patterns of urban expansion (sprawl). My current community involvements include service on the committees that run the Louisville Brownfield Pilot and our Brownfield Cleanup Revolving Loan Fund. My hobbies include participant observation in eco-tourism activities (scuba diving included) when I get the chance... and my work, especially since I share both with my wife, another CPEO listserv member, Kristen Yount. -- Peter B. Orrick is a large firm (525 lawyers) with offices in S.F., L.A., Sacramento and several other locations (nationally and overseas). I've been practicing law for 18 years, the first ten as a California Deputy Attorney General and the last eight years with Orrick. My practice is varied and includes litigation (mostly Prop 65 cases, Clean Water Act litigation and contaminated property disputes) as well as counseling and transactions. In the brownfields area, I have assisted numerous clients in selling and buying properties, ranging from former service station sites up to Superfund sites. I represent a number of national lenders making commercial and multi-family loans and have a good feel for their requirements as far as contaminated properties are concerned. FYI-Orrick is the leading public finance law firm in the entire nation (both in dollar volume and number of issues) and we are trying to help public entities find resources and creative financing for brownfields development. Please contact me if you need an introduction to one of our public finance attorneys. Thanks. Bruce S. Klafter, Esq.
