-  Franklin M. Fisher
    Professor of Economics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 
Cambridge, Massachusetts

OVERALL PURPOSE OF CONFERENCE:
This important national conference seeks to bring together hydrological 
resource scholars, researchers, state, federal and municipal officials, 
practitioners, and civic organizations to advance the understanding of 
water resources as the basis of sustainable metropolitan communities.

THE CONFERENCE WILL:
1.  Develop a more sophisticated understanding of the relationship between 
regional economic growth and its hydrological resource base.
2.  Examine case studies highlighting problems and explore possible 
responses that can support region-based governance of urban water resources.
3.  Offer an overview of problems imposed by current water supply and 
sewage infrastructure practices and their economic implications.
4.  Present a vision of how improved water resource modeling, combined with 
preservation of existing natural capital, might guide future investments in 
urban hydrological infrastructure.
5.  Identify the research requirements necessary to create regional-scale 
integrated economic-ecologic models and decision-making tools that can 
guide future urban water infrastructure investments and governance.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:
1.  Practitioners, professionals, and environmental and planning officials
involved in water resources, sustainable development, and regional growth 
issues and projects.
2.  Scholars in water resource research and related educational disciplines.
3.  Government officials interested in water resource and regional growth 
issues.
