Panel Decides on Toxic School By ROBERT JABLON Associated Press Writer (snippets) LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Los Angeles school system has been advised to finish building a half-completed, multimillion-dollar high school on a toxic site and deal with potential dangers later. An expert panel set up specifically to decide the fate of the Belmont Learning Center voted 4-3 Wednesday in favor of completing the project at the downtown site - a former oil field that releases potentially dangerous gases. The commission said it would attach conditions on dealing with the dangers of the site later. The district already has spent $144 million on Belmont, the nation's most expensive high school. The commission concluded that finishing Belmont and adding technology to ease the gas problem would boost the cost about $50 million more than the original estimate of $200 million. A commission report concluded that going to a replacement site would send the total cost to $339 million. ...Construction was halted after it was discovered that the 35-acre Belmont site was polluted with explosive methane and potentially deadly hydrogen sulfide... ...In recommending the school be finished, the commission said it would also suggest that the school board ask the state attorney general whether proceeding would violate state law against building on toxic sites.
