Proposal to build school on toxic site riles Quincy

By Regina Montague, The Boston Globe Correspondent, 11/28/2000

Quincy officials who selected a site near the former Fore River Shipyard
for construction of a $60 million high school say the ultramodern
complex would be a point of pride for the community.

But today, the proposed site will be named one of the ''Dirty Dozen,''
the state's worst environmental and public health threats, by the Toxics
Action Center, a Boston environmental advocacy group.

Bethlehem Steel used the 24-acre Quincy Avenue property as a dumping
ground from the 1940s to early 1960s. The soil contains asbestos, lead,
cadmium and polychlorinated biphenyls, and volatile organic compounds,
though debate continues over whether the pollutants reach a level at
which they could cause harm, especially if a proposed barrier between
the soil and the school is installed.
