[CPEO-BIF] S. 2700 is still alive

Despite the reports that U.S. Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott has
promised to prevent the passage of any Brownfields legislation, the
bipartisan Brownfields bill, S. 2700, is still alive. In fact, the list
I just received of the bill's co-sponsors (see below) includes 49
Senators from both parties.

The bill would preserve, enhance, and fund EPA's national Brownfields
initiatives, but it's a compromise, falling short of the language sought
by environmental and environmental justice organizatinos. Still,  S.
2700 probably represents the only chance that Congress will enact
legislation this year dealing with environmental cleanuip.
