Cleaned-up site to house transit control center
Minneapolis salvage yard undergoes transformation

 By spring, what was once an ugly industrial site filled with piles of
wrecked cars, leaking batteries and scrapped tires will become Metro
Transit's new $3 million control center in North Minneapolis.

At groundbreaking ceremonies today, officials from several governmental
agencies will celebrate the accelerated cleanup of the former Doc's Auto
Salvage, a tax-forfeited Superfund site at 10th and Eighth avenues. 

 In an innovative joint powers agreement, the Pollution Control Agency
entrusted Hennepin County with performing the $750,000 cleanup at a faster
pace than the state agency. The agency will reimburse the county $400,000
in state Superfund money, and the federal Environmental Protection Agency
will kick in $200,000 for the removal of 3,600 tons of lead-contaminated
soil from the property.
