Subject: [CPEO-BIF] Who should test redeveloped Superfund site?
 
The following editorial from the Mountain View Voice raises an important
question about the reuse of contaminated property: Who ensures public
health after remedies are implemented? Ironically, this site, the "MEW
Study Area," was featured on the cover of an EPA brochure on the
Superfund Redevelopment Initiative.



City, EPA Must Test Senior Center Site for More than TCE

Many in Mountain View this week voiced worry that the city's temporary
senior center would be located above a plume of toxic groundwater. While
the contamination -- the result of leaks of the solvent TCE from
semiconductor plants in the 1970s -- is far below the surface, shoddy
federal regulations certainly make this an issue of concern for
residents and city government. 

The fact that the city -- as opposed to the companies that polluted
Mountain View -- must pay to test the air inside the proposed site shows
the local trickledown effects of inadequate federal policy.
