2002 Brownfields Funding Workshops

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 9 Brownfields Team
is partnering with the California Center for Land Recycling to host
three workshops to assist communities interested in applying for
brownfields assessment, cleanup and revolving loan fund grants. These
grants provide funding to assist communities that plan to return
contaminated (or potentially contaminated) properties back to productive
reuse. The workshops will focus on helping participants understand the
basic elements of the grant programs, the new process for submitting
grant proposals, and the required proposal elements. Representatives
from EPA will be present to help answer your questions. This will be the
first year that funding for brownfields grants will be awarded under the
new Small Business Liability Relief and Brownfields Act (SBLRA) signed
by President Bush on January 11, 2002. On October 9th, EPA will issue in
the Federal Register its request for proposals for these brownfields
grants. The final guidelines may be downloaded from the EPA's national
brownfields webpage by pasting the following link into your web browser:

 www.epa.gov/brownfields/pdf/guide1002.pdf.

The due date for the assessment, revolving loan fund, and cleanup grant
proposals will be December 16, 2002.

 What topics will be covered?
 *       What is a brownfield?
 * What are the types of funding available for brownfields?
 * How and when to apply for a brownfields grant?
 * What are the key elements of a brownfields proposal?
 * What assistance is available for preparing a grant proposal?

 Who should attend?
 Individuals interested in preparing proposals for brownfields funding
or deepening their understanding of the brownfields program, including:
 *       State,
 *       Tribal, or
 *       Local governmental officials;
 * Representatives from Land Clearance Authorities or other
quasi-governmental entities;
 *       Regional councils;
 *       State sanctioned redevelopment agencies
 * Representatives of non-profit organizations; and,
 * Other individuals interested in partnering with an eligible
entity to apply for brownfields funding.

 Note: See the proposal guidelines for a complete list of the entities
eligible to apply for these grants.

 How much does the workshop cost? All three workshops are free of
