Subject: | [CPEO-BIF] GREEN BROWNFIELDS II |
GREEN BROWNFIELDS II Dresden, Germany June 15-19, 2003 The main focus of this meeting entitled "Green Brownfields II" will be to concentrate on the interdisciplinary approach to the brownfield development issue and the reuse of former industrial sites. Brownfield remediation plays an important role in city development as well as for the redevelopment of former mining sites and sites with industrial and/or cultural heritage. The interaction among all involved parties, such as owners and investors, regarding the environmental liabilities, and the technical partners in developing the strategies for the planning and cleaning up of contaminated sites play an important role in the development. This includes financing concepts, risk assessment, and risk sharing by insurance companies, project managers, as well as local and governmental authorities. The rehabilitation of former mining sites are major areas of concern with a lot of similarities in the states of Colorado (USA) and Saxony (Germany). The conference will provide a platform at which representatives of the mining industry and authorities, city development agencies and partners, and EPA representatives can communicate and discuss common projects and problems. There will also be a review of the ongoing work of the U. S.-German environmental treaty phase III "Brownfields." This work is sponsored by BMBF (Germany) and the U. S. Environmental Protection Adminstration. The Chairs of the Conference are Herbert Klapperich of the Freiberg University of Mining and Technology, Germany; Volker Franzius, UBA, Germany; Karl Alvarez, U.S. EPA; and Charles D. Shackelford, Colorado State University.
