Toxic Site Proposes Healthier Cleanup System Could Cut Toxic Emissions Mountain View Voice July 4, 2003 By Julie O'Shea A new cleanup system environmentalists and federal officials are calling more "eco-friendly" than others currently operating in Mountain View may soon be installed at one of the city's largest Superfund sites. The systems being explored by Raytheon -- which sits on the Middlefield-Ellis-Whisman (MEW) site -- would prevent toxins from seeping into Mountain View air. They could also dramatically lessen the amount of pollutants released into the air at a plant in Red Bluff, CA, where carbon vessels carrying what's left of the Mountain View site's pollution will be superheated and, at least in theory, destroyed. Raytheon is looking into a process that would use a combination of hydrogen peroxide and ultraviolet light or ozone to transforms the cancer-causing solvent trichloroethene (TCE) -- which Raytheon and other companies leaked into ground water -- into less harmful byproducts. Those byproducts would end up sticking to the granular carbon used to filter toxins from water and air. ... for the entire story, see http://www.mv-voice.com/thisweek/2003_07_04.raythn.html -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight c/o PSC, 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 <lsiegel@cpeo.org> http://www.cpeo.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To read CPEO's archived Brownfields messages visit http://www.cpeo.org/lists/brownfields If this email has been forwarded to you and you'd like to subscribe, please send a message to cpeo-brownfields-subscribe@igc.topica.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ | |
