Subject: [CPEO-BIF] EJ/Community Caucus Plans Two Evening Sessions

The National Environmental Justice/Community Brownfields Caucus,
facilitated by the Center for Public Environmental Oversight (CPEO),
plans two evening sessions at Brownfields 2003. This year's meetings
will take place both October 27 and 28 at 8:00 pm in the Broadway III/IV
room at the Portland Hilton, 921 SW 6th Ave. Attendance is open.

At the first session, Monday night at 8:00 pm, the Caucus will hear
about community involvement strategies in brownfields from a panel of
Portland environmental justice activists. In addition, CPEO will lead
discussions on two important federal initiatives related to brownfields:
the All Appropriate Inquiry Negotiated Rulemaking and National Advisory
Council for Environmental Policy and Technology (NACEPT) Superfund
Subcommittee.

On Tuesday evening at 8:00 pm the Caucus will meet jointly with
job-training program providers from the National Institute of
Environmental Health Sciences/EPA Brownfields Minority Worker Training
Program, to explore opportunities for cooperation at a local level. This
program offers comprehensive training to disadvantaged residents in
communities impacted by brownfields to foster both the economic and
environmental restoration of their communities. Tipawan Reed of the
National Puerto Rican Forum /Office of Applied Innovations in Chicago;
Jack Gilchrist, from the Center to Protect Workers' Rights in Seattle;
Kiameesha Evans, from St. James/Blake House in Newark New Jersey; and
CPEO's Lenny Siegel will make brief presentations.

The EJ/Community Caucus has been meeting at national Brownfields
conferences since 1997. The Caucus is one of the few events in the
year where community activists working in brownfields from across the
country can discuss what is working in their communities and what needs
to be done. High-level officials from U.S. EPA usually attend one
Caucus session, providing participants an opportunity to raise issues
that they find difficult to discuss in the conference's more structured
sessions.

We hope you can attend.
