N.J. moves to speed building on brownfields By ALEX NUSSBAUM NorthJersey.com February 11, 2005 New Jersey is overhauling its rules covering the cleanup of toxic pollution, a move that could spur redevelopment at thousands of old industrial sites but also could mean some sites won't get cleaned up at all. The revised rules would affect the speed and cost of cleanups statewide - from old chemical factories in Fair Lawn to Paterson's abandoned factories and gasoline-tainted wells across the region. The proposals, still under review, include the first update in 12 years of groundwater pollution standards and the state's first standards ever for soil contamination. They'll determine how much businesses have to spend on sites where they've fouled the ground and water - properties that developers see as potential gold mines of new homes, shops and parks. Both environmentalists and business groups have problems with the plans. ...
