DEC will test air at local sites Polluted water could release vapors By Dan Shapley Poughkeepsie Journal February 26, 2005 The state Department of Environmental Conservation will test the air at as many as 27 hazardous waste sites in Dutchess and Ulster counties, where toxic vapors could be seeping up from polluted groundwater. These sites include homes, businesses and a day-care center. Across New York, more than 400 sites could be in line for air tests, including 68 in DEC's Region 3, which includes Dutchess, Ulster, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Westchester and Sullivan counties. The DEC has not yet decided which of the sites it will test. In November it published a draft policy for dealing with "vapor intrusion" that will guide its decisions about specific sites. The list was obtained by the Poughkeepsie Journal through a Freedom of Information Law request. The list mirror sites the Poughkeepsie Journal identified as potential concerns in April 2004. The DEC has identified these sites because there is a potential for people to be exposed to hazardous vapors. Decisions about how to clean up these sites were made prior to 2003 -- before the DEC considered toxic vapors a risk. ...
