Officials update residents on TCE By: HILARY BENTMAN The Intelligencer (PA) March 3, 2005 Federal and state environmental officials were in Perkasie on Wednesday to update residents about the investigation into the potential cancer-causing contaminant that lies beneath parts of the borough. Representatives from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection were on hand to answer questions from about 25 residents about the status of the ongoing TCE investigation in Perkasie. Decades ago, TCE, or trichloroethylene, a suspected carcinogen, was a common product in degreasers, paint removers, typewriter correction fluid and some adhesives. Prolonged exposure to TCE vapors can be a health risk. Both the EPA and DEP are conducting separate but overlapping projects in Perkasie. The EPA is focused on whether residents are breathing harmful vapors in their homes, and the agency has been testing groundwater, soil vapors and indoor vapors. ...
