EPA says TCE may exist beneath homes in BallyDon Brensinger Pottstown Mercury (PA) March 22, 2005 BALLY -- More than 40 homeowners have been notified that toxic vapors may exist beneath their properties. The letter from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency asks residents near Fourth Street for permission to perform vapor intrusion sampling in the basements of their homes to test for the contamination of trichloroethylene, known as TCE. Mitch Cron, EPA remedial project manager, expects the sampling results to reveal if and where TCE is present beneath the properties. The test will also specify whether the TCE vapors exist in concentrations that pose a potential threat to residents. "We don’t know if it’s a concern or not at this point, but that’s something we are trying to figure out," Cron said. "It is our responsibility to evaluate it and see if it’s a problem or not." Homeowners were invited to meet with Cron and Megan Dougherty, EPA compliance officer, Monday at the Bally Borough Hall. Cron explained that the possibility of TCE vapors is a result of contaminated groundwater that originated from the former Bally Engineered Structures plant. ...
