Traces of chemical found in Albany schools By SEAN WOLFE Corvallis Gazette-Times (OR) April 6, 2005 ALBANY - Air samples have shown minute traces of tri-chloroethylene, or TCE, a probable cancer agent, inside Albany's Liberty School as well as outdoors. But the school is not alone: Control tests conducted at Sunrise School and West Albany High School displayed similar levels of the chemical. Where it's coming from, no one's sure. Showing up in concentrations of parts per trillion, the chemical may come from groundwater contamination but also from common materials such as White-Out and rug shampoo, according to Geoff Brown, a project manager for the Department of Environmental Quality. Those were the findings reported at a public meeting at Liberty on Monday night, which drew a small gathering of about 30 people. The open question is why the levels of TCE in the air at West and Sunrise are comparable to those found at Liberty. Brown said the DEQ would sample soil vapors, and inventory products used at the school to see which, if any, products could be contributing to the higher than expected levels. ...
