Chromium contamination disaster of epic proportions By TOM MORAN NEWHOUSE NEWS SERVICE Jersey Journal May 9, 2005 The Rev. John McReynolds suspected that something was amiss when the rainwater running down the gutter near his Jersey City home turned green. "It looked like Mountain Dew," he says. "You got used to it. Nobody acted like it was important." He knows now that this green stuff was a curse. Not one sent by a vengeful God. This was planted in his hometown by three large corporations that left giant mounds of cancer-causing chromium sitting on their properties for half a century. Kids played army on those toxic mountains in the summer, and went sledding on them in the winter. They splashed their bare feet in the green waters. ...
