Pumps purging TCE from Vestal site

Project to clean chemical from beneath Parkway plaza

VESTAL -- Contractors recently installed a system to suck chemical gases
from beneath a plaza on the Vestal Parkway and will continue tests this
winter to see how far the pollution has spread into a nearby residential
neighborhood. 

The project, which so far has cost taxpayers more than $220,000, is
designed to clean the former Hidden Valley Electronics site at 1808
Vestal Parkway East, now occupied by American Family Fitness & Aerobics
Center and several other businesses. 

The system, which includes large vacuum pumps to purge the ground of
trichloroethylene (TCE) pollution, was activated this month. In coming
months, contractors working for the state Department of Environmental
Conservation will test approximately 12 homes on or near King Street to
see whether they have been tainted with fumes from a subterranean plume
of the chemical, said Mary Jane Peachey, a regional engineer with the
DEC. 

Earlier this year, the agency offered vents to prevent fumes from
entering two properties in the neighborhood after test results showed
high concentrations of the chemical under foundations and traces of it
inside the homes.
