Cancer risk closes Addyston school Ohio EPA warns of exposure to Lanxess plastics plant fumes By Dan Klepal and Denise Smith Amos Cincinnati Enquirer (OH) December 6, 2005 ADDYSTON - Decades of breathing the air in this West Side town means a 50 times greater risk of contracting cancer because of chemicals coming from Lanxess Corp., the giant plastics maker operating along the Ohio River. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, after studying the air for seven months, ordered the plant to reduce emissions of two key chemicals in its manufacturing process - acrylonitrile and 1,3-butadiene. And upon hearing OEPA's analysis of the air study - accomplished after two monitors were installed on the roof of Meredith Hitchens Elementary School, directly across the street from the plant - Three Rivers School District officials decided to close the school for several weeks. ...
