Canton alderman seeks dialog with Wal-Mart officials on site selection

Alderman Eric Schenck called a press conference Wednesday to discuss in
further detail his proposal for Wal-Mart to build a Supercenter at the
old International Harvester site near downtown Canton rather than the
north edge of town.

...

Schenck pointed to some parallels. He noted the city owns the IH site
which consists of about 33 acres, including approximately four acres
that have been declared in need of "no further remediation" by the
Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. The Supercenter could be built
on those clean four acres of property. The rest of the site, which has
some isolated areas of soil contamination, could serve the rest of the
store's needs. This might be possible to accomplish without undue delay,
he suggested.

...

The city has received a lot of support from the state and federal EPA,
said Schenck. "They want us to be successful in developing the
brownfield site," he said. "I can't help but think" those agencies would
help accelerate development there if Wal-Mart were interested in
locating at the site.
