Canton alderman seeks dialog with Wal-Mart officials on site selection By JOHN FROEHLING Canton Daily Ledger (IL) January 5, 2006 Alderman Eric Schenck called a press conference Wednesday to discuss in further detail his proposal for Wal-Mart to build a Supercenter at the old International Harvester site near downtown Canton rather than the north edge of town. ... Schenck pointed to some parallels. He noted the city owns the IH site which consists of about 33 acres, including approximately four acres that have been declared in need of "no further remediation" by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. The Supercenter could be built on those clean four acres of property. The rest of the site, which has some isolated areas of soil contamination, could serve the rest of the store's needs. This might be possible to accomplish without undue delay, he suggested. ... The city has received a lot of support from the state and federal EPA, said Schenck. "They want us to be successful in developing the brownfield site," he said. "I can't help but think" those agencies would help accelerate development there if Wal-Mart were interested in locating at the site. ...
