Vapors raise concerns at plaza Ventilation may be hastened By Dan Shapley Poughkeepsie Journal (NY) January 9, 2006 A plan to vent the air in a portion of 9 Plaza on Route 9 in the Town of Poughkeepsie may be put on an expedited schedule. It can't come soon enough for store owners there, who had been kept in the dark about the contaminated air. The workers at a group of small stores are the latest local people to deal with "vapor intrusion," when odorless fumes from polluted groundwater seep through soil and accumulate in buildings. Customers visiting the stores should face no risk. Long-term exposure to workers is enough of a concern the state has labeled the air in four stores "a significant threat to human health." Even at the levels detected, the health department does not expect workers to experience health problems. ...
