State pollution cleanup fund running low on money

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A program to clean up pollution and redevelop property in Michigan is running low on cash.

The Clean Michigan Initiative has helped renovate old industrial sites, protect water supplies and improve parks for nearly a decade. But state officials say there's not enough money to add new sites to the project list in the upcoming budget year and work may have to slow down on jobs that already have begun.

The fund's budget problems are expected to worsen in 2008. That could leave lawmakers scrambling for a way to keep the program running.
