State to test more Vestal houses for TCEBy Tom Wilber Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin (NY) March 21, 2006 VESTAL - State environmental and health officials will test about eight more homes north of a hazardous waste site in Vestal to see whether vapors from a subterranean plume of solvents are a public health threat. The pollution is from trichloroethylene (TCE) that has seeped into the ground beneath the former Hidden Valley Electronics site, which is now a plaza housing American Family Fitness & Aerobics Center and several other businesses at 1808 Vestal Parkway East. It is forming a plume of vapors flowing about a half mile under the four-lane parkway and a pedestrian walkway into at least two homes on King Street. Scientists are still analyzing samples collected earlier this year from 12 homes in the neighborhood, near King, Maple and Birch streets, to determine the extent of the pollution, said Mary Jane Peachey, a regional engineer with the state Department of Environmental Conservation. When that is done, officials will decide whether they have to step up efforts to eliminate the pollution under the plaza, about a half mile to the southeast. ...
