Low deal with Home Depot nothing newBy Jack Spillane New Bedford Standard-Times (MA) March 24, 2006 The New Bedford Redevelopment Authority's agreement to sell tax-foreclosed property to Home Depot below the assessed value is not unusual, say experts in brownfields cleanups. In fact, selling a contaminated property cheaply to a private sector concern that is willing to clean it up is more common than waiting for a government cleanup, said representatives of the Conservation Law Foundation and the National Brownfields Association. "By and large, that is the way things tend to happen," said James A. Hamilton, managing director for CLF Ventures. CLF Ventures is a nonprofit arm of the Conservation Law Foundation and consults with private companies wishing to clean up and develop brownfield sites, as former industrial sites are known. ...
