Panel outlines NWI's brownfield redevelopment effortsBY PATRICK GUINANE Northwest Indiana April 12, 2006 INDIANAPOLIS | Transforming the ruins of steel's heyday into economic jewels remains a key priority for the region, Northwest Indiana officials said Tuesday at a state-sponsored brownfield conference. "People think of Gary as the steel capital -- it has all of things that go along with that," said Dorreen Carey, Gary director of environmental affairs. "We've got a lot of opportunities, a lot of problems, but it's really a great challenge to be working on." Kay Nelson, environmental director for the Northwest Indiana Forum, outlined more than a half-dozen potential redevelopment sites ranging from 30 acres of greenspace to a 500-acre industrial tract near the Gary/Chicago International Airport. ...
