Tyler Pipe says it will close foundry

Company announces layoffs for 180 workers at Macungie site.

Tyler Pipe Co. announced Friday that it is closing its foundry and laying off 180 employees in Macungie.

The Tyler Penn Foundry, site of a major fire in November, employs 34 management and 163 hourly workers, according to a company spokeswoman. All but 17 in shipping and receiving — operations that will be maintained — will lose their jobs.

Boehm said she fears the foundry closure means the borough will now have to deal with a brownfield, a term used to denote contaminated land that can be difficult to put to new uses because of environmental constraints.
