JOHNSON ANNOUNCES $750,000 IN CLEAN OHIO FUNDSFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Ohio Department of Development July 10, 2006 Columbus, OH -- Lieutenant Governor Bruce Johnson today announced that a $750,000 Clean Ohio Assistance Fund (COAF) grant has been awarded to Cuyahoga County to assist in the demolition and remediation of the former National ACME Company site, located at 170 East 131st Street in Cleveland. Once complete, the project is expected to create 30 jobs. "Clean Ohio funding is designed to help communities transform former distressed sites into viable locations for future economic development," said Johnson, who also serves as state development director. "By preparing this brownfield property for new investment, we are demonstrating that 'Ohio Means Business.' I'm confident that the partnership Cuyahoga County has formed for this project will result in the creation of good jobs for the community." The 14.24-acre property is owned by Acme Realty, LLC, a property holding company for Handl-It, Inc., which plans to utilize the property as warehouse and manufacturing space. The total cost estimate for the proposed remediation and demolition is approximately $3.6 million. Cuyahoga County will contribute $1 million towards assessment, demolition and infrastructure activities, while Handl-It, Inc. will contribute approximately $1.1 million for the remaining activities. The State Controlling Board today approved the funds, which were awarded from the $10 million COAF. Funds must be used for Phase I and II Environmental Assessments, brownfield redevelopment or public health projects. Projects eligible for funding are those located in situational distressed, inner distressed, distressed or labor surplus cities and are evaluated based on economic benefit; environmental improvement, including public health benefit; appropriateness and reasonableness of the proposed project and the financial condition of the community.
