Brownfields a gray area?

PORTAGE - The textbook image of a brownfield is a former industrial or commercial site in an urban wasteland, potentially poisoned for any reuse or redevelopment by lingering pollutants.

Yet local experts say even abandoned gas stations with possibly leaking underground storage tanks can be considered brownfields; for example, two sites along Central Avenue, one at Hamstrom Road, the other at Parkview Street.

These sites may be eligible for grant money or low-interest loans, technical cleanup assistance and even selective demolition to turn an eyesore into an eye-appealing green space or a new business adding to the city tax base.

Also, because both Portage sites are within a half mile of a school, they might qualify for 20 percent off a total loan amount, according to Indiana Brownfields Program officials.
