Environmentalists sue DEQ over hurricane landfillsBy JANET McCONNAUGHEY The Associated Press New Orleans Times-Picayune August 9, 2006 NEW ORLEANS (AP) — At least three landfills taking Hurricane Katrina debris violate federal clean air and water laws, environmentalists said in a federal lawsuit filed Wednesday against Louisiana's secretary of environmental quality. Secretary Mike D. McDaniel's authorization for the landfills allows what is essentially open dumping, forbidden under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, the lawsuit said. None of the landfills is lined to keep chemicals from seeping into the ground, making them unsuitable for waste that includes household hazardous wastes, it said. ...
