Cleanup expert's new venture: rail
Tom Darden has prospered by cleaning up polluted sites and converting them into valuable properties. Now he wants to transform the land around 12 proposed commuter train stations across the Triangle into homes, stores and offices. Darden, 51, is determined to push forward with this plan, even though the Triangle Transit Authority hasn't been able to attract federal funding to build the rail system. Putting the development before the train is an untested strategy, but Darden is accustomed to breaking new ground.
