Brownfields 101: Understanding and Getting Started in the Brownfields Marketplace

Sunday, November 12, 3:00-5:00 p.m.

Are you a local government or nonprofit representative looking to spark brownfield revitalization in your community, but don't really know where to begin? Are you a brownfield site owner and want to learn how the redevelopment process works? Do you work for an environmental management or remediation firm, a development company or another for-profit entity and are you considering entry into the brownfields marketplace? Recognizing that many attendees of this year's conference will have limited or no experience with brownfield projects, we are pleased to offer this two-hour pre-conference workshop to help you jumpstart the learning experience. You'll learn how a brownfields project is planned, designed, and implemented from both cleanup and redevelopment perspectives. The workshop is divided into four phases that will include both presentations and plenty of time for discussion and Q&A. Experienced professionals from both the public and private sectors will lead this workshop and be available to answer your questions. Some of the many things you'll learn about include the following.

* Planning and Due Diligence - Phase 1 & 2 assessments; risk assessment, cleanup alternatives; property appraisals; permitting, remediation cost estimates; liability assessments; risk transfer tools; public sector financing and information

* Acquisition - selling the site; structuring deals; taking title; environmental insurance; indemnifications; grant/financing applications

* Design - cleanup scope of work; waste management/recycling; hiring consultants for cleanup, site and building design; permitting, pro forma; financing strategies; tax incentives

* Construction - regulatory compliance; greenbuilding and LEED certifications; technical support; incentives and financing; leasing and/or selling

There is no charge to attend this workshop. However, you must be registered for Brownfields 2006 and you need to pre-register for this workshop by sending an email to or by calling Melissa Koenig at mkoenig@icma.org or 202-962-3632 to secure a spot.
