Springfield eyes J&L building for police

SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield Select Board has found a new home for the 
police department.

The Select Board voted unanimously Monday to ask voters to buy the Lucas 
Industries building on Clinton Street for $825,000. The purchase would 
be part of a $2.2 million bond issue that would include renovations to 
the white brick building, as well as renovations to the Springfield Town 
Hall.

The sale is contingent on the Lucas site getting a clean bill of 
environmental health. There is concern about contamination from previous 
owners, Chairwoman Mary Helen Hawthorne said.
