FORMER PICKLE FACTORY IN HAYWARD READY FOR DEVELOPMENT
The California Department of Toxic Substances Control today announced that a three-acre site of a former pickle factory in Hayward, which was once contaminated with pesticides, fuel, and perchloroethylene is ready for residential development. The property, which housed the Kruger Foods Inc. pickle factory from 1950 to 2004, is first in California to be cleaned-up under the Brownfields Cleanup Act of 2005, which protects property developers from certain liabilities associated with land clean up, the department reported. According to the California Department of Toxic Substances Control, there are more than 100,000 sites in California designated as brownfields--"properties with real or perceived contamination that may be vacant or unused due to environmental cleanup costs and liability concern." ...
