Macalloy's once-contaminated site gets clearance for developmentBY PETER HULL Charleston Post and Courier (SC) November 19, 2006 A large waterfront property with a notorious environmental past has a new lease on life, having completed the geological equivalent of rehab. Until last month, the Macalloy Corp. site still technically was considered one of the most polluted industrial sites in the nation. But the Environmental Protection Agency now says the tract is ready for business again after a two-year, $9.5 million cleanup. Under pressure from environmental regulators, Macalloy closed its North Charleston metals plant about eight years ago, a move that eliminated about 200 local manufacturing jobs. At that time, neon-colored polluted water was seeping into the creek and radiation contaminated the soil under the now-demolished factory. ...
