Arcadia still best site for new school, officials sayBy Julie Mack Kalamazoo Gazette (MI) December 1, 2006 A drive to locate Kalamazoo Public Schools' new middle school in the city's Eastside neighborhood instead of Arcadia is undermined by the lack of a feasible site, school and city officials say. "In a perfect world, the school board would have chosen the Eastside," Kalamazoo Mayor Hannah McKinney said. "But there's not any land to do it." KPS officials say they don't intend to back away from a signed sales agreement with the Western Michigan University Foundation to purchase 40 acres in the Arcadia neighborhood, on the city's far west side, for the $24 million school. They say the only other site big enough in the city is Schippers Crossing, a 227-acre brownfield that was a former city dump. "There are some real serious issues with putting a school on a contaminated site," board Trustee Eric Breisach said. "Do you want your kids playing on a football field with contaminated soil?" ...
