BEVERLY Toxic waste keeps field off-limits City delayed action on Innocenti Park By Steven Rosenberg Boston Globe (MA) January 28, 2007The sign on the recently erected chain-link fence outside of Innocenti Park reads, "Keep Out," and city officials say people should stay away from the popular softball field for good reason: There's lead and tannery waste under the playing field. For at least seven years, Beverly city officials had suspected that the earth below the park might be contaminated, but tests were just conducted at the site last month. Those tests revealed lead and chromium 6 inches below the surface of parts of the park; other tests showed contaminated sections that run 18 feet below the finely manicured lawn, and underground sections of a nearby basketball court, street hockey court, and skateboard park. "I'm sorry it fell off the radar screen, but it did," said Mayor William Scanlon Jr., who estimated that it would cost $500,000 to make the field safe again for sports. Scanlon said the most likely solution will be to cover the field with 3 feet of clean fill, then new sod. ...
