Ongoing air monitoring at Keith discussed tonight

NEW BEDFORD - A public meeting will be held at Keith Middle School 
tonight to discuss ongoing air monitoring at the school, as well as 
cleanup efforts at New Bedford High School.

The new Keith Middle School, which opened in December, was built on a 
former city burn dump site contaminated with heavy metals, semi-volatile 
organic compounds and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Although 70,000 
tons of contaminated soil were removed, some still remains under a cap.

Community activists and concerned citizens have questioned the school's 
safety, despite the fact the project received approval from the federal 
Environmental Protection Agency and the city's own environmental 
consultants.
