[While an increasing number of states and local governments are tracking
contaminated sites, sometimes making information available via web sites,
few are actively notifying the public. Existing requirements for
notification at the point of property sale closing are inadequate. Does
anyone know of something similar to what St. Joseph County is trying? - LS]


Home sweet landfill in St. Joseph County?
Many people don't know they're living near Superfund site.

Lynn Madison wasn't aware there was an old landfill with some rather nasty
things in it when she and her former husband built their Jenny Lane house
18 years ago.

She doesn't believe the Realtor knew about the landfill. And she remembers
neighborhood meetings during which residents of the area around Douglas
Road between Grape Road and Indiana 23 were told about the problem and what
would be done about it.

Seven places in the county have been designated as county administrative
control areas and an additional three will be added later.

But there wasn't one place you could go to find out about all of them until
last year, when the county water protection ordinance gave the Health
Department the authority to stick their noses into all those areas.
