Test show high chemical levels in 4 homes REBECCA ROBINSON Bennington Banner (VT) April 25, 2007BENNINGTON - The first round of indoor air sampling in four homes near the Energizer battery plant has revealed levels of cancer-causing chemicals that are above the state median. Michael Smith, a site director for the Waste Management Division of the state Department of Environmental Conservation, said Tuesday that the results were based on samples of indoor air taken from the basements of four homes directly adjacent to the plant on Gage Street. Those results showed that the levels of the compounds tetrachloroethene (PCE) and trichloroethene (TCE) were above the state's indoor air screening levels of .57 micrograms per meter cubed for PCE and .5 micrograms per meter cubed for TCE in the houses sampled. "Summa" canisters that function as vacuums were placed in the basement and first floor of the houses and allowed to collect air for 24 hours. The canisters were then sent to a lab for analysis of the air they contained. ...
