Brownfields Program helps reclaim property By Floyd Jernigan The Duncan Banner (OK) May 13, 2007DUNCAN - An effort to reclaim property that may be unwanted or abandoned and in need of an environmental cleanup is well under way. ...The first year of its existence resulted in identifying 10 sites, with 13 more located by 2002. Assessment grants have allowed ASCOG to find more potential sites, and grant money has aided in cleanup. Today, said Smith, 38 viable sites have been identified with a high potential for redevelopment. ...Smith noted that brownfields have included a former hospital, oil refineries, wastewater treatment plants, carpet manufacturers, dumps, gasoline service stations, apartment complexes, banks, machine shops, manufacturing operations and railroad yards. "One of the challenges in rural Oklahoma is that the price of most land is not expensive. So it's often easier for someone to buy another piece of property than worry about a possible contamination issue." ...
