Grant could let Atlantic City turn brownfields into parks By DAVID BENSON Press of Atlantic City Atlantic City, NJ Tuesday, May 15, 2007 A $200,000 federal grant could put Atlantic City on track to build as many as nine public parks on the island, four of which would give residents a way to get to the beach. And if the state has any input, city officials will give a long look to some of the wastelands in the South Inlet area. ...Documentation at the EPA Web site, pulled from the city's application for the grant, points out that the island has fewer than 30 acres of land developed as neighborhood parks or recreation areas. "Brownfields assessments will facilitate the creation of an estimated nine public parks, four of which will provide waterfront access for residents and city visitors," according to the application. ...Larry Hajna, a spokesman with the state Department of Environmental Protection, said it is up to Atlantic City officials to decide how to spend the grant. But he said the DEP encourages the city to use the grant to assess a state Brownfield Development Area.
