Poughkeepsie — Talk to people in the business of rescuing old industrial sites from the taint of pollution — the so-called brownfields — and Joseph Bonura Jr.'s estimated $50 million Poughkeepsie waterfront remake gets the highest kind of praise.

"He's got just a terrific project," says Newburgh City Manager Jean-Ann McGrane, herself a former regional director of the state Department of Environmental Conservation — and a brownfields expert who's trying to lift her city out of industrial and commercial decay.

Why all the gushing? Because Bonura, a graduate of the University of Virginia's esteemed business school, did it smart. He made the often criticized brownfields program really work.

The DEC is already talking up the Bonura project to would-be brownfields applicants as an example of what can be done, according to industry insiders. The Bonuras — Joseph's brother Michael and father Joseph Sr. are partners — already have made a big splash with their glittering, 44,000-square-foot Shadows on the Hudson restaurant and The Grandview catering business in a brick-faced, two-story complex with a copper patina roof overlooking the Hudson River about a quarter-of-mile south of the Mid-Hudson Bridge. It's got 300 parking spaces, a 14-foot-wide TV in Shadows, a ballroom the size of an infield in Grandview with an 8,000-square-foot kitchen.
