An 'honor' boro could do without

Lot one of state's most toxic

Communities usually celebrate when they win an award, but one recent "honor" bestowed on the borough was greeted with a Bronx cheer.
When the Citizens' Environmental Coalition unveiled the "winners" of the 
group's fourth annual Dirty Dozen Awards in Albany, an abandoned 
industrial lot in Soundview - next to a public high school - was 
recognized as one of the 12 most toxic sites in New York State.
"We've been trying to get the site cleaned up for years, but have only 
received broken promises from the owner," said Mary McKinney, president 
of the Concerned Residents Organization. "Hopefully, this will lead to 
the needed cleanup of the site."
McKinney, who lives in an apartment complex across from the site on 
Story Ave., has documented years of violations on the property - from 
illegal dumping and fueling stations to overnight parking of trucks 
hauling rancid, out-of-state garbage.
