Taxpayer costs for brownfield cleanups likely to grow Press & Sun Bulletin 7/13/07 By Jay Gallagher Albany Bureau Chief Besides the more than $1 billion that the state knows it owes developers of projects built on polluted land, taxpayers could be on the hook for billions more, according to state officials. That's because besides 54 projects already identified as qualifying for breaks, another 123 are also in line to get them, officials said this week. "Once you get into the program, you get the tax break," said Environmental Conservation Department Deputy Commissioner Val Washington. "We don't have any discretion over that."
