Hamlet middle school site polluted By RUSS OLIVO Woonsocket Call (RI) July 17, 2007WOONSOCKET - Consultants have identified three different kinds of environmental pollution at the proposed Hamlet Avenue middle school site that will have to be cleaned up to the satisfaction of the state Department of Environmental Management (DEM) before construction can begin, officials say. Oil from leaking underground fuel tanks, industrial chemicals and prior deposits of "urban fill" have tainted the soil at the mill site, according to Fuss & O'Neill, the city's consulting engineers. ...Because the middle school construction project is on such a tight schedule, the city is in the odd position of applying for cleanup permits before it even knows whether there will be money available for the work - or new middle schools, for that matter. A citywide voter referendum is set for Aug. 14 to decide whether to borrow $74 million for the project, of which the city envisions spending about $4 million for the cleanup or - as it is known in the jargon of environmental regulators - site remediation. ...
