Cleaning up the old Intermet site would be boost for Ironton, region [That's Intermet, not Internet] Huntington Herald Dispatch (WV) August 6, 2007In the world of industrial development, there are greenfield sites and there are brownfield sites. A greenfield is a piece of land that has not been used for industrial purposes. In most cases, it has been used for homes or farms. The Toyota plant in Putnam County and the Sun Coke plant at Haverhill, Ohio, were built on greenfield sites. A brownfield is a site that has been used for industry in the past. In most cases, a brownfield site has some sort of chemical or other contamination left behind by previous owners. Perhaps the best brownfield site in the Tri-State is the former Intermet Ironton Iron site in Ironton. At one time, hundreds of people worked there making parts for the transportation and rail industries. The entire site is about 24 acres, and it had 17 of those acres under roof. ...
