Refinery expansion may affect county properties By Stephanie Ariganello Monroe News (MI) August 28, 2007Marathon Petroleum is exploring a proposed $1 billion expansion of its refinery in Detroit in order to process heavier Canadian crude oil. The oil would be delivered to the refinery through a widened pipeline running through Monroe and Wayne counties. According to Marathon, the expansion holds the promise of stabilizing gas prices in the region and creating 135 permanent jobs and 800 temporary construction jobs. In order to make the upgrades and additions, Marathon is seeking tax abatements in the form of brownfield redevelopment and is studying a 17-acre brownfield site adjacent to its 200-acre southwest Detroit refinery. The project would expand the refinery's capacity to 115,000 barrels a day from 100,000 barrels - theoretically increasing gasoline supplies in Michigan. ...
