Subject: | [CPEO-BIF] New working paper from NEMW on energy benefits of brownfiields redevelopment |
The Northeast Midwest Institute recently issued a working paper entitled ENERGY BENEFITS OF URBAN IN-FILL AND BROWNFIELDS REDEVELOPMENT. The 6 page pager reviews recent studies that examine potential energy savings of infill development and green building practices on brownfields. >From the conclusion: "To stress the obvious, if brownfields/in-fill projects can be demonstrated to be typically dense, close to urban centers, accessible to transit, connected to the urban street grid, green/energy efficient, requiring less infrastructure, and more likely to be served by an alternate or distributed energy system, the energy savings that could be projected would be eye-opening. Current research establishes a strong transportation-related energy savings benefit for in-fill/brownfields development. However, there are numerous unknowns, particularly on the building and site side of the equation. NEMW recommends additional study of the energy characteristics of brownfields sites to better define the energy-brownfields-in-fill connection."
