Critics say Elmhurst school site too toxic BY NICHOLAS HIRSHON New York Daily News October 30 2007A building in an industrial area that will house three high schools next September could prove to be contaminated if toxic chemicals from a former factory nearby have seeped onto school grounds, an environmental expert said. Walter Hang, president of Toxics Targeting Inc., which collects data on hazardous waste sites, said the longtime headquarters of Peerless Instruments Co. - a few blocks from the soon-to-open schools - poses a very serious threat. Peerless, which makes precision instruments for aircraft and submarines, operated out of 90-15 Corona Ave. from 1947 until 1986. Contamination was found in its soil in 1989, but the dirt was never remediated, Hang said. The mix of mercury, lead and other toxic chemicals underneath Peerless could easily travel the few short blocks to 45-10 94th St., where the city wants to put 1,600 students starting in September, Hang said. ...
