South Hill testing: ICSD board made the right move Editorial Ithaca Journal (NY) November 15, 2007 With all the controversy that has surrounded trichloroethylene (TCE) testing at South Hill Elementary School, it is nice to see one group make a forceful step forward. The news that the Ithaca City School District Board of Education voted Tuesday to allocate $25,000 for testing for toxins at the school is welcomed. The district also made the right move in officially asking the state Department of Environmental Conservation to conduct further TCE testing at South Hill, even though state officials are being stubborn in their beliefs that no further testing is needed. The first round of testing, done earlier this year, showed that TCE was detectable in samples outside the school and under the school's sub-slab, but the levels were not high enough to concern state officials. Community members have asked that another round of testing be conducted when school is in session during the winter heating season. But the state has refused to do another round of testing because it believes the school is OK. ...
